Blending Tables For Essential Oils

Blending For Body

Recommended blending for the body, is a 2.5% dilution of essential oil to the carrier oil. This means one drop of essential oil to every 2.5 mills of carrier oil.

Simply divide the volume of your dark glass container by 2 as less is always best. Your bottle will be in mills but our essential oils must be in drops. I know this is not very clear but if you read the table below I feel certain you will understand and if you don't, just follow the blending table.

Blending For The Face
When blending for the face the dilution is 1.25% this is exactly half of the body quantity of essential oils/drops. But for easy mixing and safety we use 1%
Blending For Pregnancy And Baby
In Pregnancy the dilution is 1/2% (half) to 1% never stronger and only after the 3rd month unless a practitioner and a doctor OK it. Babies only after the 6th month as their liver isn't yet formed and only with a Doctors or Practitioners guidance.

Pregnancy Blending Table.
Carrier - Essential Oil for Pregnancy 1/2% (Half a percent).
 after 3rd month
20 ml - maximum is 2 drops or less
30 ml - maximum is 3 drops or less
50 ml - maximum is 5 drops or less
For babies over 6-12 months use half a percent as for pregnancy.
Blending Factors:
The blending factors are, determined by the rate of evaporation, when applied onto the skin. If they evaporate quickly the penetration is minimal. I have not included blending factors in this manual as that is a story all of its own and needs careful explanation to learn blending factors you'll simply have to attend one of my workshops.
Remember - less is often more effective. Sweet Marjoram & Rosemary can either be a sedative or a stimulant according to the dosage so when blending it is vital to follow the prescribed dosage because if the wrong amount is given, the blend will simply not produce the desired therapeutic effect.

DON'T FORGET when starting it is important to begin simply with just two essential oil added to the base oil .
Lower Raise Or Regulate
A Febrifuge essential oil will reduce high temperature. Your body's normal temperature is 37 Degrees Celsius or 98.6 Fahrenheit. A fever is an abnormally high body temperature. Don't be intimidated by words such as Febrifuge it simple explains A function of a group of oils.

Febrifuges: (lowers body temperature)
Black Pepper, Basil, Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Lemon, Ginger, Chamomile.
It is important to work out in aromatherapy if you need to bring the temperature down or up The oils which encourage the cycle of perspiration are termed Sudorifics.

Sudorifics: (raises body temperature)
Basil, Chamomile (all), Juniper, Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme and Peppermint. (bathing or compresses)
Babies:- Do not use Essential Oils at all on babies under six months, oils that are safest for 6 month old to 2 years are:-

German Chamomile or Lavender in a half a percent,(1/2%) dilution. Always premix oils and use even less than half a percent dilutions. See babies in the A-Z Recipes & Ailment section.

To Lift Your Mood Each Day:

Make a bottle of breathe in (sniff)

In a 5 ml brown bottle with a flat pressed in type of dropper add:-

1 ml each of Bergamot, Basil, and 3 ml Olive Oil. Sniff this no more than 3 - 5 times per day. Do not get this on your skin if you do apply Olive Oil immediately to the skin, then wash area with warm soapy water. The Olive Oil will neutralize the adverse effect of the above mix which is far too strong to apply to the skin.

While your pregnant or breast-feeding it is better not to use toothpaste as it contains harmful chemicals. Brush your teeth by sprinkling bi-carbonate of soda or ground sea salt onto your toothbrush.

Put bi-carbonate of soda onto the palm of one hand add a few drops of water to make a paste then rub this into your arm pits.

Exhaustion Mix

Do not use until you are at least 3-4 months pregnant.

In 100 ml Olive Oil add 4 drops each of coriander, grapefruit, lavender, peppermint

Massage gently onto your chest & stomach in a circular motion. Do not use of a night as the peppermint may prevent you from sleeping.

 Delivery Room

As soon as labour pains begin, massage this mixture in a circular clockwise motion into your stomach and down your legs to the knees.

100 ml Olive oil add 5 drops each of Clary Sage, Lavender, Mandarin, Rose Geranium.

After the birth; put two tablespoons of nutmeg into juice or milk and drink. This will kill unwanted bacteria.

Post Natal Depression

Use essential oils sparingly and be sure never to administer to yourself just before your treasured little darlings feed. Your baby is not to be given any essential oils before six (6)months of age. So if you’re breast-feeding do not use the oils yourself but you may use the smell therapy technique. See Baby section.

Toxic Oils

Aromatherapist with at least 4 years experience know how to use all oils safely

Essential oils must be used in correct dilution for the body 2.5% or less

For the face 1.25% or less mixed in cold pressed pure carrier oils.

Approximately 85% of essential oils are safe to use for external applications.

But the remaining 10-15% of essential oils can be hazardous in some way, so good therapeutic knowledge of the oils and correct dilutions and application is of great importance.

Defining What Is "Toxic"

Some essential oils are abortifacients (cause abortions).

Toxic is commonly called, "poisoning" and at a certain dosage becomes fatal. This includes external application even when less dilution is mixed they still produce harmful effects to the kidneys and liver.

 1.    Abortifacient - A term classified as toxicity of an essential oil and an emmenogogue (menstrual flow) action together producing a fatal result. Lethal dosage is determined by grams / kilograms.

Bitter Almond, Boldo Leaf Oil, Calamus, Camphor Brown, Camphor Yellow, Horseradish, Jaborandi Leaf, Mustard, Mugwort, Pennyroyal, Rue, Sassafras, Sassafras Brazil, Southernwood, Savin, Thuja, Cedar leaf, Thuja Plicata, Tansy, Wormseed, Wormwood, Wintergreen.

 2. Chronic toxicity - Low-level dosages taken regularly over long periods of time. Weeks, and months of external application might cause kidney and liver cell damage.

3. Irritation - Inflammation of the mucous membrane or local area of the skin . This is usually nothing to worry about, wash well with warm water, apply Olive oil to the effected part and drink plenty of water.

 4. Sensitization - An 'allergic reaction', an intense form of irritation that affects the whole immune system. Even small amounts can cause severe reactions. Similar to food allergies.

Not To Be Used On Skin Or Inhaled Directly

Cassia, Clove Bud (Leaf and Stem), Cinnamon Bark, Costus, Elecampane, Fennel (Bitter), Origanum, Origanum (Spanish), Pine (Dwarf), Savory (Summer), Savory (Winter)

Oils To Be Avoided Under Some Conditions

Antidote To Homeopathy Remedies: - Eucalyptus, Peppermint, White Camphor, Black Pepper

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension per = high) -  Do not use :- Eucalyptus (all), Peppermint, Rosemary, Thyme (all varieties), Sage, Basil

Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension po=low) - Do not use:- Lavender, Clary Sage, Melissa, Marjoram, Ylang Ylang, Lemon

Photosensitive to some skin types:- Lemon, Lime, Orange, Verbena, Tangerine, Mandarin, Bergamot, Angelica, Lemongrass, Grapefruit.

Photo toxic:-  (do not use during the day, go into sun or under a sun lamp) Bergamot, Lemon, Orange, Neroli

Epilepsy: - Basil, Eucalyptus (Globulus, Radiata & Polybractea), Fennel, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage & Thyme.

The oils that are convulsive or can cause epilepsy are generally made up of Phenols or Oxides which in large dosages can cause convulsions and be neuro-toxic, so correct dosages are important when blending. Phenols are the most irritant on skin and mucous membranes and they can damage liver if in massive dosages.

Babies not at all under six months, safest for 6 month old to 2 years:- German Chamomile, Lavender and Mandarin (but in a 1/2% dilution for massage) Only one drop in a bath mixed with 2 - 3 tablespoons of carrier.

Lactation:- Oils that interfere or dry up milk flow during Lactation:- Clary Sage, Peppermint, Sage (blocks the milk duct)

Safe Oils For Lactation:

Lemongrass, Geranium, Fennel (1/2%-1%) BUT DILUTED

Oils that cause skin sensitizations or irritate sensitive skin types:

Basil, Cedarwood, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Peppermint, Pine, Tea Tree, Thyme, Ylang Ylang..

Oils that have Emmenagogic Properties:-  (i.e. promotes menstrual flow): - Basil, Cedarwood, Fennel, Clary Sage, Myrrh, Marjoram, Sage, Peppermint, Thyme.

Should not be used in Pregnancy. Massage can commence after the first trimester, after client has been to the doctors to check all health aspects.

These constituents effect the liver by making it overwork in order to excrete them. The convulsive essential oils contain ketone constituents, in six out of eight essential oils, so caution is needed. See Abortifacient Oils.

Pregnancy Safety-The safest Essential Oils to use in Pregnancy are: - Chamomile (German), Lavender, Neroli, Orange, Tangerine, Mandarin, Lemon, Sandalwood, Rosewood.

Some essential oils may be beneficial to use during pregnancy, but need to be used with caution. Please consult with a qualified Aromatherapist before using essential oils during pregnancy.

 Fragrance Oils

Fragrance oils that are used in burners are not my idea of safe Aromas, and should never be applied to the skin. The cost of these in Australia is around $1.50 - $3.50. You get what you pay for;(1991 prices).

Happiness Messages

The right aroma sends happiness messages to our brain, then our brain sends happiness messages to our body. Likewise if the aroma is not pleasing to us unpleasant messages are sent to our brain and then to our body.

The aromas travel in the air stream via a hair like structure (called cilia) in the roof of our nose connecting to part of the brain called the olfactory by means of a nerve fiber. The olfactory is concerned with our instinctive drives; creativity, emotions, hunger, intuition, memory, sleep patterns , sex drive, thirst and so on, causing a cascade of responses in the central nervous system and the entire endocrine (hormonal) system. All that is positive such as falling in love, pleasing odours, joys of eating great food, listening to uplifting music, watching a terrific movie, viewing breath taking sights, receiving nurturing touches, and massage all cause the release of 'happiness chemicals ' called phenylethylamine also found in chocolate and a family of opium-like substances.

 Negative Feelings

Receptors for brain hormones associated with negative feelings such as anger, depression and fear are located in the skin and on cells in the immune system called monocytes. This is why the way we touch another can trigger all kinds of reactions and response.
